The story of New York · October 19 to October 26
A quieter week citywide, with vandalism pockets in Laurelton and Parkchester
Most report types ran below normal across New York, but a few Queens and Bronx neighbourhoods saw vandalism reports jump from near zero.
15 vandalism reports near Laurelton, where none were logged in 8 weeks
This week New York logged fewer reports than usual in most categories. There were 4,273 public order reports against a normal of about 8,009, and 743 vandalism reports against about 1,170. Some reports arrive a day or two late, so the latest days may still fill in.
Laurelton in Queens stood out. Three neighbouring parts logged 15, 14 and 10 vandalism reports this week, where the previous eight weeks saw none to about 0.4 a week. Next door in Hollis, 8 public order reports came in against about 0.6 a week.
Parkchester in the Bronx followed a similar pattern. It logged 15 vandalism reports against about 1 a week normally, with 6 more next door against about 0.4. Jackson Heights had 7 against about 0.3.
Some clusters held steady all week. In East New York, 78 vehicle theft reports were logged within 400 metres of one point, 57 of them on weekday daytimes. On the Lower East Side, 267 road hazard reports gathered around a single point.
