The story of New York · September 26 to October 26

A quieter month across New York, but not in Laurelton or Parkchester

Most report types ran below normal, but road hazard and hazmat reports came in above it, led by a Lower East Side cluster.

27,522 public order reports in 30 days, against 37,034 normally

In the last 30 days, New York was calmer than usual on most measures. There were 27,522 public order reports against a normal 37,034. Vehicle theft reports came to 5,342 against 6,350, and vandalism reports to 4,300 against 5,275.

Road hazards went the other way, with 24,682 reports against a normal 22,827, and hazmat reports reached 424 against 360. Much of the road hazard weight sat on the Lower East Side, where 267 were logged within 400 metres of one point this week, 263 of them on weekday daytimes.

The month ended with sharp local jumps in vandalism. Three neighbouring parts of Laurelton logged 15, 14 and 10 vandalism reports this week, against none to about 0.4 a week before, and nearby Hollis had 8 public order reports against about 0.6. In Parkchester, 15 vandalism reports came in against about 1 a week normally.

Vehicle theft was below normal citywide, but East New York stood out. There, 78 vehicle thefts were logged within 400 metres of one point this week, 57 of them in weekday daytime.
