The story of Monterey County · October 21 to October 28
Closed lanes on 1, 101 and 68, and a close watch on the hills east of Salinas
A coastal flood advisory stayed up on Monterey Bay and Big Sur, while satellites and CHP logged fire reports inland.
144.1 MW strongest satellite heat reading this week
This week was mostly about the roads. Caltrans kept one-way traffic control on Highway 1 at Rocky Creek Bridge, Point Sur and Mud Creek, the thread followed most closely with 40 updates. In Salinas, full off-ramp closures at Airport Boulevard, East Market Street and Oak Avenue stayed posted on US 101, along with lane closures between Sanborn Road and Sherwood Drive.
On the Peninsula, the eastbound Highway 68 off-ramp at Toro Park was listed fully closed, with alternating-lane closures and one-way control at El Toro Creek Bridge. In Castroville, northbound Highway 183 lanes were closed from Del Monte Avenue to Route 1, near defective traffic signals CHP logged at Pajaro Street.
Along the water, a National Weather Service coastal flood advisory covered Northern and Southern Monterey Bay and the Big Sur coast. Caltrans conditions and the coastal feeds are new to Lantern, so there is no normal yet to compare them against.
Inland, satellites picked up heat in the Gabilan Range east of Salinas on Tuesday, with readings as high as 144.1 MW, and no new heat for about 24 hours after. CHP logged five vegetation fire reports along Highway 25 in eleven minutes Tuesday evening. In Carmel Valley Village, KSBW reported an apartment fire that damaged a building and businesses, where satellites had detected heat early that morning.
