A Sunday of roadside fire calls and afternoon crashes across LA

The day began with a power outage near Redondo Beach, and road hazards around Downtown stayed far above normal this week.

11,607 SCE customers in the early-morning South Bay outage

Today's longest-running thread was a string of vegetation fire calls along roads and freeways. Calls in Pomona, Pasadena, Echo Park, Watts and Van Nuys were still listed as active, though no new ones had come in since 3:26 PM. In Pasadena, the city helicopter circled the westbound 134 at the Fair Oaks onramp until about 3:55 PM, and that call was still open.

The afternoon brought a run of collisions. CHP logged three in 22 minutes on Sierra Highway and Soledad Canyon Road in the north county, at 4:16, 4:21 and 4:38 PM. On the southbound 5, there were four reports between Atlantic Blvd and Paramount Blvd, and a new crash at 4th Street in Boyle Heights at 4:22 PM.

In the southeast county, calls on the 710 at Del Amo and the 605-to-91 connector were still open, with no new collisions there since 3:47 PM. Earlier, at about 2:45 AM, Southern California Edison reported an outage affecting 11,607 customers in the South Bay around Redondo Beach.

Behind the day sits a busy week for road hazards. Downtown LA has 54 this week against a usual 8, and East Hollywood, Reseda, Exposition Park and San Pedro are each running around ten times their usual counts. Vandalism reports are also high in Canoga Park, with 21 this week against about 2.
